Just deleted my Reddit account because of a couple reasons. One, I barely used it after the API pricing protests, and two, Reddit is allowing users' posts to be used as AI training data, which I find reprehensible for obvious reasons. I will admit that I feel pretty sad about it, though, because I made my account back before Reddit completely went down the shitter and was actually kinda decent. I hope more people use Lemmy or Kbin because it's feeling pretty lonely here in the Fediverse. Sorry this vent isn't particularly sad. I'm just kinda bummed about this is all.

P.S. obligatory fuck u/spez lololololol

I was perma-banned from Reddit after 7 years for mentioning facts about Elon Musk and his Boring Company's Not a Flamethrower contraption. No hate speech, nothing obscene or gory, just plain facts, with supporting links. I appealed twice, they denied my appeal.

I've left my account intact though, but have highly debated with myself whether to use one of the mass overwrite services to edit all my posts and comments into pure random garbage, then rewrite all of that again to say FUCK SPEZ!!!

From my understanding, they keep a backup of your previous comments before your edit, so it's necessary to overwrite it at least twice, or they can just flip the switch and restore all your mass edited comments.

The only reason I haven't done it yet is because my account still allows me to view communities tagged as NSFW, but hell, the only time I visit Reddit anymore is when someone happens to toss me an interesting link.

IDGAF if the AI has already 'learned' things from my posts, I probably partly corrupted it's digital brain anyways. Many of my posts were factual, some were random rants, and a good number of them were just lighthearted trolling.

If I stumbled into a post showing some sort of random roadkill or some nasty shit, half the time I might be like 'Are you gonna eat that?'. Yes, I might be partly to blame for why AI has such a poor concept of food consumption. πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

Obligatory FUCK SPEZ!!!

Use old.reddit

It don't give two shits about NSFW content and still shows you everything

Using Reddit's trashy normal site has the weird 'create an account bullshit to see NSFW content'

The day that stopped is the last day I would ever touch that site.

[–] flicker 3 points 1 week ago

To add to this; if you get one of those "this community isn't reviewed please make an account" things, old.reddit gets past all that, too.

[–] over_clox 2 points 1 week ago

Well hot damn, I didn't know old.reddit could do that. Thank you very kindly for sharing that knowledge!

Welp, one of these days soon, whenever I get a chance, I might take the deep dive and nuke my Reddit altogether. πŸ‘

Damn, I didn't know you could just overwrite all your comments and stuff. I should've done that, but alas, what's done is done. Maybe if I changed them all to "fuck u/spez" my whole account would be nuked, comments and all

[–] over_clox 6 points 1 week ago

Yep, sure can. I edited my comment to include the link for Power Delete Suite...

I did the same last year, but a bunch are back. Not all twelve years worth, but half of them. Gonna make another run at it....

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

I’m sure they keep all the edits, it won’t matter how many times you overwrite it you’re just making new versions.

[–] Hobbes_Dent 11 points 1 week ago

I wanted to since I left, which was in my case to read an absurd ban and never return.

I won’t go back, but I haven’t deleted the two accounts. Partly out of apathy based on it already being scraped, partly out of a hoarder nature (big part here), and partly for the off-chance to see some witty shit I wrote in an AI hallucination.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting 10 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I want to delete mine. I've heard they undelete your comments though. If there's a way to destroy the data I'll do that instead

[–] mipadaitu 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Depending on how many comments you made, you can go and edit them to nonsense text.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Unfortunately I spent a few years being an insufferable wad on that site, so there's too much to delete by hand.

[–] Blue_Morpho 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The perfect use for AI! Have a script use AI to overwrite your old posts with realistic looking but nonsense text.

The API is still there. You get 100 free API calls per minute.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting 2 points 1 week ago

Oh, word? I think scrubbing my account with some AI junk would take like an entire day then

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I used Power Delete Suite to overwrite all my comments with nonsense. The hope is they can't profit off my thoughts by training AI.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Even better. Replace your comments with AI nonsense. This way not only is it harder to tell you did it, and restore from backup, but you also poison any of their trained models.

I've heard they keep at least one backup, so you should overwrite your data twice, at least. There are other solutions out there that do the same as well.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting 4 points 1 week ago

Saved for later. Thanks buddy

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

They should really make that an option, and the fact that they don't is infuriating

I've been here since Reddit is Fun went down. Been a little over a year I think and I have no regrets. It took some getting used to, but it's honestly been an amazing experience. After this long I don't even miss reddit anymore. It may be a little lonely here sometimes, but it's getting bigger every day and I hope you find a home here. And personally, I like the smaller size. Brings back the vibes of the older internet in a good way.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Reddit is Fun was so awesome. It's a damn shame that it and all the other APIs had to see the chopping block. It would've made a great Lemmy API.

[–] Speculater 1 points 1 week ago

Same, RIF was my jam man. Sure, there are fewer comments and interactions here, but I also check it much less frequently and get similar quality of content. Hell, we even have repost bots now!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

Something I need to do as well.

Obligatory fuck Spez!!!

[–] [email protected] -4 points 1 week ago

Why not just use both reddit and lemmy? Why follow other ppl when reddit is still really useful? Why hinder yourself?
