I wanted to build a Pell for myself and my kids to use and was wondering if y’all knew if there was any advantage to using a round vs square post. Also, if you have any tips or designs I’d really appreciate the help =)

I prefer a round pell only because you're able to rotate it indefinitely and not cutting directly to the flat edge of thw timber.

I'm relatively new to HEMA, but here's what I made: I actually found a tutorial for a hanging pell a while back that was relatively inexpensive and works well if you have a place to hang it. It was basically a length of rope knotted near the end with a dog Kong toy (or off brand version) slipped through such that it caught on the knot. You can also create a small loop at the end of the rope that hangs from the bottom of the Kong for thrusting practice. Of course it kind of looks like a noose. You throw the rope over a tree branch of something, adjust the height as needed, loosely tie off the non-Kong end (e.g. wrap around the tree trunk), and you're good to go

Pros: Inexpensive, can change height easily, no base that you may trip on Cons: Swings when hit (may be a con), smaller target less like a person standing there, requires something to hang from
