Petrichor is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The word is derived from the Greek words "petra" (stone) and "ichor" (the blood of the gods). Petrichor is caused by the release of Volatile Organic Compounds from the soil. These VOCs include geosmin, a compound produced by actinobacteria, and plant oils.
