Essentially there are blinded studies that have had the facilitator and communicator on either side of a “wall”. At the end of said wall they will place images and ask for descriptions. Sometimes the images are the same and sometimes they differ, causing the facilitator and the communicator to see separate non matching images

The overwhelming majority of the time when the images differ the description of the image matches what the facilitator sees.

This matters for a few reasons. one is because when fc was huge in the 90s and early 2000s several individuals were charged with sexual abuse claims based on fc. The facilitators had invented narratives about abuse that never occurred (in at least one case a wild claim of a satanic cult that no evidence of which could be found). But the primary reason is because it appears you’re giving a voice to someone who cannot speak and the majority of the time that does not appear to be the case

This is why basically every speech and pediatric association has firmly spoken out against fc, which is resurging for some reason

Facilitated communication is bullshit and there is strong evidence to support it is greatly influenced by the facilitator. Just because you can cherry pick one example of a high functioning person that can utilize the system doesn’t change the many times it has failed blinded studies or the significant harm it has caused. I would bet this person could also communicate with pecs or some other system of alternative communication

True but some people have rare burgers and the ground beef ruins what you’ve said

[–] quixotic120 5 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

This is incorrect

4 hours is the safe to consume cutoff per other agencies (like the center for food safety in the uk) but they agree foods that spent more that 2 hours in 40-140F shouldn’t be refrigerated, even if still safe to eat

https://www.cfs.gov.hk/english/trade_zone/safe_kitchen/Temperature_Danger_Zone.html

The usda is far more conservative. Same basic guidelines but food should be refrigerated within an hour and discarded after 2. Dunno if this is reflective of changes in quality in the food supply or just more concern for liability

https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/danger-zone-40f-140f

Will you get food poisoning if you eat 6 hour old pizza? Frankly almost certainly not, but it depends on a number of factors like if and how it was handled, the holding temp during service, immunocompromised status, etc. real world studies on pizza specifically show fairly low bacterial growth on pizza that was prepared safely and not handled, but significantly more (although still pretty low) if the pizza was handled during serving (which is more realistic).

But I mean literally millions of people eat rare beef every day without issue so it’s about how much risk you’re willing to tolerate, ultimately

4 hours max in the zone between 40 and 140F is the general guideline for risk. There are a lot of nuances to it like how pasteurization and sous vide cooking work but in general that’s a good rule of thumb

It’s a a weird relic of the times that the dirty version is still censored

The best pan is the $20 no name stainless steel pan from a restaurant supply store. Cast iron is for Dutch ovens that need to retain heat for stews and curries and shit. Anyone that genuinely prefers cast iron over stainless just doesn’t know how to preheat a pan and use cold oil. “Oh I want a pan that requires ongoing maintenance, can never be properly cleaned, isn’t actually non stick at all, and weighs 900 pounds so doing any kind of toss is a total pain in the ass”

It’s not nothing but reddit claims about 270 million weekly active users. So it’s ultimately a difference of about 270 million (especially given that some active users here likely still use reddit and aren’t strictly a loss for them)

It’s a good thing though. The fediverse needs to grow a bit to feel less like a ghost town on less popular communities but when you grow too much you become a shitty community filled with bad decisions and poorly thought out compromises

Depends on the piracy site. If you go to some of the pirate streaming sites or the blogs that host tons of pirated software with 30 rapidgator links that die after a month (instead of just using a torrent like a normal sensible person trying to share a 2-30+gb file that is begging to be taken down) without Adblock it’s absolutely comical how many ads there are. Even with Adblock those are the sites that manage to still have ads because they’re on the cutting edge of sketchy shit. It’s like seeing a late 90s to early 2000s website with how much random bullshit is pasted everywhere

Despite that I’m pretty sure that Amazon, google, etc do far more nefarious shit behind the scenes in terms of tracking/fingerprinting you and collecting data to sell

It’s a trivial repair assuming that’s the extent of the damage and there’s not any quirks associated with an extremely complex medical device that has no documentation whatsoever. Like maybe after not having the controller’s power supply connected for such a length of time there needs to be a calibration process upon bringing it back to life that can only be done with proprietary software

The biggest thing though is that by going in and fixing it yourself you open yourself to the possibility that the company will now say “oh this was worked on by someone else and that’s why it’s broken, we won’t work on it now”. That’s the state of repair rights in America, vendors are openly hostile to people who fix their own things even if they do it sufficiently. We used to have political representation that gave us regulations to allow us to work on and even modify our cars without impacting the warranty but that’s been eroded and there’s not really anything of that nature for tech stuff (other than judgements saying broken warranty seals don’t count for anything)

Misleading and bad headline. The article itself mentions that Kia has patched the exploit and the guy who found it has a disclosure page that outlines how it was confirmed to be patched before releasing any details and Kia confirming there was never anyone using this

So no, they can’t. They could, but no one did, and now they can’t. It was a glaring oversight but shit happens and Kia responded swiftly, patching the exploit within days of it being reported

People don’t really get this aspect of autism. I think part of it is because the visible face of autism is people whose behavior is reasonably controlled from a social impact perspective: they get frustrated and shut down, they’re awkward socially, etc. but there’s this part of the spectrum that’s largely not talked about because these people don’t have presence online and don’t socialize outside of a select group of people who know what’s up. The people with autism that are moderately to severely stunted developmentally and often intellectually as well

This article brings up the key point about said population. When a 6 year old tantrums it’s exhausting. When the person who is 13, 17, 24, or older has that same tantrum but with an adult body it’s often quite dangerous. It’s a very hard population to serve because what do you do when there is such a hazard? I worked for years in a residential setting for people in this category. Their families had thrown in the towel and decided a full time placement was the solution. And understandably so; it often would take multiple strong able bodied staff to deal with such behaviors in a safe way. Despite such approaches I still have 2 permanent injuries to my spine and neck from working there, and I have a number of scars from nasty scratches, being hit with projectiles, and bites.

Awful situation and there’s not really a good solution. I remember going into that job thinking that physical restraint was inherently unethical and now I don’t think that anymore. When a teenager is smashing their face into a door jamb over and over until they’re spraying blood everywhere, when an adult hits their head so hard they detach their retinas, when someone gets so angry at denied access that they are willing to beat a staff member until they stop moving, what else can you do but hold them until they calm down? Chemical restraints I guess but they often require a nurse or doctor, which is much more expensive to keep around all the time.

Getting an error that says language not allowed when trying to post comments. Appears random; can comment within some communities and get it on some threads but not others

Also, is it possible to search within a community? I see the ability to search for communities and to search for posts but not to search for posts within a community. So sorry if this has been posted about, couldn’t figure that one out. Great app so far though!
