I think it's an age thing. If you were a child when the prequels came out you probably enjoyed them and everyone around you enjoyed them. If you were in your 20s when they came out you probably hate them and everyone around you hated them. If you were in your 40s when they came out you probably didnt care one way or another and probably still dont...

I left Reddit for obvious reasons and I've been waiting for someone to come over to the Lemmy side. I'm tired of waiting and hope others can come join here.
I'm very new and I don't plan on moderating because I have a family and job. But I bet some of you would love to change that!
For right now, memes and discussion are encouraged at the expense of Disney's failed IP Acquisition! All the dumbness, awful, and terrible ideas are fair game! If you have some good things to say, that's okay too. A broken clock is right twice a day and certainly Disney could happen on a brilliant take once in awhile. But for those that know (we really know), they screwed up the biggest revival of our lifetime that we'll never get back!

I question that to though. I was in my teens when they came out. Maybe it was because the church community I was in generally like Star Wars... but I seriously have never met a single person who "hated" them.
I don't doubt some people did. But I just think its a huge false equivalency to compare the criticisms of the sequels to those people.
Everyone I know except for children (at the time of release of ep1) hated the prequels. Like... HATED... (again, except for those who didnt care at all) I've never met someone who thought they were good.
I was about 19 when the prequels came out and I don't know if it was hate. It was definitely confusion and a distraction with the hyper lightsaber fights. The acting was definitely horrible but when was Star Wars ever about the acting? I feel it was more about the mythology and storytelling. Now with the Disney Star Wars, it's all about the churning of material and having no clue on a storyboard. They had zero clue what to make the Disney Trilogy about and it was all Mad Libs.
I was 11 when the phantom menace came out. It was cringeworthy.
Jar jar Binks is a travesty that never should have been green lit. The acting, minus McGregor and Neison was atrocious. Pod racing was weird and felt like it shouldn't have been on there. The lightsaber fights felt more like dancing.
I like the prequels because of the memes. Bad movies make good memes.
At the time, George was surrounded by "Yes men" and "Yes women". It amazes me just how many endings just kept adding up from A New Hope to the Phantom Menace. ANH had one, ESB had two, ROTJ had three and TPM had four damn endings. Everyone thought he could do no wrong and the same damn thing happened with Disney. Even I was naive.
Now they are gonna screw up another IP with Indiana Jones. It's sad and pathetic.

By that point everyone who thought he could was basically forced to shut up. He'd already been fined 1/4 million $ by the Directors guild for Empire Strikes Back and subsequently left the guild. He advanced special effects, filming with hd digital cameras, and cgi.
I think George is a good example of wax wings too close to the sun.
But Disney's yes man situation isn't comparable. They ended up here because of their massive budget and lack of fucks. At least George was creating something new... the sequels are literally just rehashing the older movies.
Agreed there are plenty of valid criticisms of the prequels. But nobody chalks those up to blind hate/sexism/etc.
I think the criticisms of Disney Star Wars are just as valid if not more valid (Breaking canon and lack of direction or creativity).
