Metroidvania

Metroidvania is a subgenre of video games focused on guided non-linearity and utility-gated exploration. The term, popularized by video game critic Jeremy Parish, is a portmanteau of Metroid and Castlevania.

This is a cloned community from Reddit. I intend to hand over mod support to the original mods should they choose to migrate to Lemmy.

Is it weird to be a Metroidvania enthusiast who hasn't been able to finish a Castlevania game? I like them, but they don't draw me in like others.

Sometimes I want to take Hollow Knight out of my top 3 but I've replayed it around 4x times and it's easy to see why it's so popular. It just has so much attention to detail that other MVs lack even if they are very good. I tend to not want to include it because I'm hoping others branch out to discover all the other MVs out there.
