American city names: New-removedshire-Upon-My-Ass

[–] [email protected] 25 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Have they decided which of Arkansas and Kansas is pronounced correctly? I assume that's what their civil war was about.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Arkansas is the one which was originally named, it comes from the french name of one of the tribes that lived in the region. Kansas just thought it sounded cool.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Then can you explain where, exactly, they're carrying those wayward sons?

[–] samus12345 6 points 11 months ago

I dunno, but there'll be peace when they are done.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001 5 points 11 months ago

It's easy when they're just dust in the wind

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

There is a Kansa tribe. No need to erase natives over interstate bullshit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Didnt know, just kinda assumed due to how often states either split or names get recycled.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

While in Kansas the Arkansas River is pronounced arr-kansas. Otherwise it's Arkansaw.

You can say removed, it's the internet.

Eidt: wow you actually can't. That's stupid. Literally 1984.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

That will be your instances fault everyone else is absolutely fine. Lemmy.world admins are awful.

Anyway we should all be on smaller instances just on general principle.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

That's lemmy.world for ya ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

New Bundleofsticksshire-Upon-My-Ass

That’s a brutally discriminatory name these days.

They prefer the term London

Always interesting to see people mention my hometown of removedshire online.

I live in South Bummersly these days though.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Pronounced "Sow bumsly", no doubt.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 months ago

I'll sow her bumsly, if you know what I mean (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I can picture it. It's definitely a Southern town, no northern industrial city.

I bet it has 12 pubs around a village green.

Meanwhile the Americans have the British names but pronounce it completely different because of the fucking bostoners

[–] droans 20 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Don't place the blame on us. The British have changed their dialect like twelve times since we were their colony.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Well that's because you unsubscribed from the language patches, made your own fork and then did nothing with it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

I assure you we have done plenty with that fork…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (4 children)

How do you pronounce Worcester?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Woster for short

[–] TAG 2 points 11 months ago

As an American who lived in Worcester, MA for a number of years: Wuster or Wustah

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago
[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Askin' the REAL questions!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Also because the British have proven themselves incapable of taking care of the language, as proven every day by cockneys.

[–] 13esq 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The whole point of cockney is that you can tell who is and isn't a local.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

And by local they mean on the street by street level.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Burning, ham

Yet they can pronounce Halifax just fine.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 months ago

Usually 4chan but there are multiple chan-sites

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yes, I later figured. Saw tens of other chans too Thanks.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I was slightly disappointed when I learned that 4chan wasn't a play on "fortune"

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Americans who pronounce 'Dubois' as DEW-boyse and DU-bwah depending on personal preference.
