I'm not necessarily talking about value based on what people are willing to pay for it. I've heard that a thousand times.

Rather, what key moments within his career led to his perception of being a great artist, and what differentiates him from someone like me who could do essentially the same?

This isn't to say that he wasn't a skilled artist in his own right, just that the techniques he used were very basic, such that an elephant could perform them under the right circumstances.
