Now to just need to replace all the other social media with open source

Think about it, open source twitter, open source tiktok, open source instagram

If we could get everyone to switch away from the corporate social media

Mastodon is and has been the Twitter replacement for awhile.

I have felt for a while that Twitter is really a horrible way of creating an online community. It seems to me it’s mostly for individuals with a high follow account to get their message out but for the rest of us looking for community it’s a waste of time. Reddit on the other hand I think it’s very good, we follow topics and reward valuable posts without caring who posted it.

I will point out that Mastodon and Pixelfed are Federated and open source versions of Twitter and Instagram respectively. Although, I do remember seeing something about Pixelfed's founder stepping away for a while.

We supposedly also have peertube for a fediverse youtube and apparently nextcloud joined the fediverse as well. Were already much bigger than we know.

Is there also a fediverse version of tumblr?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

What does tumblr or its clone in the fediverse bring of value? It seems to me Reddit it’s just a better Tumblr but maybe I’m missing something.

Please no open source TikTok, idiots don’t need another platform

[–] Oliper202020 1 points 1 year ago

It would be a lot better for everyone it wouldn't be literally created to make you addicted, and so the idiots would be less idiotic

We just need to bring Vine back, or a Fediverse version of it.

We need to compete against TikTok somehow

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Mmm no we dont

Alternatives for many things already exist. Only thing missing for many is large enough userbase. We can't trust every company to shoot themselves into foot like reddit did nor can we trust they will do it thoroughly enough. We can build what we have into inherently better services than what corporations have.

We probably can't recreate all the bells and whistles as the corporations have made, but actual freedom to do what we want, be it creating content or improving the services itself, is worth more than anything those moneygrubbing shits can create.

I don’t think the user base needs to hit the size of Reddit. It just needs to reach a size of critical mass where discussions are productive. I for one have not unsubscribe from Reddit, but I have killed my paid account and will promote the use of Lemmy, wherever possible, mostly by posting and participating in the groups I’m interested in.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That is what i mean, Also, too big userbase will cause problems too.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Well, that one is debatable, and it would be a nice problem to have. The cool thing about Reddit-type functionality is that countless posts is not really a problem; the better stuff always bubbles to the top. It's completely the opposite with Twitter. The more people that post, the messier it gets and the stuff that gets bubbled to the top tends to be the stuff the least informed but funniest and highest follower count posters post or promote. Many times, your follower count is in inverse relation to your intelligence and value add.

Mastodon and Pixelfed predate Lemmy

Mastodon in particular had a big boom after the whole deal with Musk. It's more popular than Lemmy still.

Open source TikTok is a different deal, uploading videos takes a lot of storage space. Plus it's hard to imagine TikTok really taking off without the profit motivations behind it.
