I have little more to add than to say that I'm seeing the same thing with both lemmy.ml and programming.dev. Subscribing to communities on other instances, such as on beehaw.org or lemmy.sdf.org, appears to work fine, and I was at some point successful in subscribing to one single community on programming.dev. In addition, posting works fine as well. No idea what's going on here; I don't think the problem is on my side.

I'm also experiencing something like that. But if it's any consolation, I am reading your post and replying to it from my own instance, so if you see this it should be a sign that federation is working.
You're still subscribed. it's just visually broken.
I've had the same issue for many many days now and would also love to know the answer to that. It happened to a bunch of communities on lemmy.ml, but also on https://beehaw.org/c/news -- No idea what it is about.
And posting from my instance is obviously also possible 🤔
