A “beautiful” beach body and a “mentally disabled” opponent. “One rough hour” of police retaliation to stop criminals. “A million Rambos” in Afghanistan. Haitian immigrants “eating the dogs” and “eating the cats”. Death by electrocution versus death by shark. Insane asylums and, of course, “the late, great Hannibal Lecter”.

These are just a few of the recent remarks made by one of two major candidates for president of the United States. Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, has spent years saying the unsayable to entertain, goad and grab attention. But his pronouncements over the past few weeks have plumbed new depths of absurdity and incoherence.

Trump, 78, increasingly slurs or stumbles over his words, raising fears over cognitive decline. He is slipping in polls against Kamala Harris and knows that defeat could lead to criminal trials and even prison. After a decade of dominating American politics, critics say, Trump could be in the throes of a final meltdown.

His verbal output now is “absolute batshittery”, according to Tara Setmayer, a former Republican communications director on Capitol Hill. “These are not the musings of a well-adjusted adult. He demonstrates daily how unfit he is to have the most powerful position in the world.”

He could become non-verbal as the result of a severe stroke, and it wouldn't hurt him at the polls. Come to think of it, he would probably be a better president that way soo...

The fucktards voting for Trump couldn’t be bothered to care.

Knowing conservatives, I'd be surprised if the majority wasn't not only tolerant but actually supportive of this unhinged shit. The handful of conservatives who aren't shitty people might be turned off by this, but I suspect that even for many of them it might be more a question of optics and how this'll affect their chances to win than any real disagreement with what Trump's saying

They have no cogent argument and not even any sort of consistent ideology. At this point all they care about is winning no matter what.

The biggest problem here is not some dumb orange politician .....

the biggest problem is an ‘Undisciplined, unhinged and deranged’ voting public

Turnip is only a symptom of a larger problem in US politics and US culture in general

And the problem isn't just in the US; conservatives pretty much around the world are just as deranged, and it's become obvious that until we somehow deal with the danger they represent, peaceful democratic societies are in danger.

I think keeping the candidates anonymous would help. All you get is their platform, their voting history, and their criminal records.

Trump, as insane as he looks to normal people, is still conservatives' most accurate representative. Conservatives love it when he says insane things because they know how uneasy it makes their chosen enemies feel.

will Trump’s strange behavior hurt him at the polls?

You would hope so.

Even if it does, the GoP are using tactics known as cheating, rigging, and intimidation. And if that doesn't work, a coup
