That's the big tech philosophy isn't it. "If at first you don't succeed, give up. Also if you do succeed, give up anyway just because"

Aand that's why i'm not an early adopter. Especially not of products from big IT.

That's why I choose open source whenever I can.

If there was an open source VR headset, I'd own it.

That’s why there are less and less early adopters overall. Big tech cut the branch they were sitting on years ago and we’ve been in a free fall ever since.

Looks like Monado is our only hope. Pathetic support from Microsoft but hopefully it will be fully supported in Linux in the next few years.

It's worked pretty well ok for me, but I only really sim race so it's all stationary and no controllers.

Highly recommend setting up Envision so it can build and setup the Monado/XR environment

I might try one second hand if they're cheap. Can any of these work without some idiotic third-party account?

... I'd replace the padding on any used device, though, that is a little gross now that I consider it.

If you're just talking about WMR devices (and not VR in general), then no, they don't require an account. The Reverb G2 is the most supported by Monado (and has the best hardware), but I'd try to get the V2 revision. And the cable is a common failure point, so could be an issue with a used purchase.

Not that I have one, or will ever update to W11, but like why?

They didn’t sell well, so no point maintaining the code when things break due to changes.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's worse than just not maintaining code. They could stop maintaining it, but keep the current version active. Instead, they remove it entirely, and now a physical object that was purchased becomes ewaste.

They didn't remove support from earlier versions of windows though.

Damn did I invest in the wrong horse.

[–] Buffalox 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Depends, did you invest in stock or products.
If stock you are probably fine, Microsoft is very good at making money.
If products, you are one of the people they make money on. And they couldn't care less if you lose out.

It's amazing how good Microsoft is at making money relative to how bad they are at making products.

I'm sure glad I didn't get the HP Reverb G2 when it launched.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago
