If you don't have chronoc headaches / migraines, you don't necessarily have to follow this advice.

Taking a pill for the slightest pain will be detrimental in the long run for your liver and the painkiller's efficiency.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Define "slightest pain".

If you're in occassional discomfort and it's impacting your wellbeing having an aspirin once in a while is probably not a huge deal.

If you have recurring pain constantly or frequently then you need medical attention and you should follow that guidance, not what anybody says on the Internet.

Thank you. People with chronic headaches or migraines are the ones that should not follow this advice, as painkiller-induced headaches are a thing and only make matters worse. Just see a doc.

As for occasional headaches: It's going to be a lot easier fixing the issue that lead to a headache once you don't suffer.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

on the contrary if it's occasional it's fine, if it's chronic you have to switch to lighter stuff like weed

It's not about glory.

It's about becoming dependant on a crutch that may not always be there, or could have been the first step when the pain becomes TRULY unbearable instead of having to escalate to btc pharmaceuticals from there.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

Once the pain sets in the meds won’t work as well/at all, depending on the type of pain and your particular body. Preemptive medication is more than just a crutch!

I don't enjoy suffering a headache or think it's virtuous, but I was always taught that pain is your body sending a message. Usually, unless it's a proper migraine, I can figure out what the cause is and address it. Muscle tension, dehydration, low electrolytes, etc.

If it remains a puzzle, I'm not opposed to OTC analgesics. I just like to try to troubleshoot first (:

Yeaaahh buuut... as a person who used to have migraines developing tolerance is a thing a very much a problem. Luckly some tolerances the body seems to "unlearn them".

I'm happy with my current liver, thanks.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

i mean to what degree does it even affect your liver from taking one pill when you occasionally get a headache?

like it cant be worse than one beer, right

[–] Wogi 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Ibuprofen crew checking in.

Those of us with minor, chronic pain would like to keep what's left of our stomach linings.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Naproxen, ibuprofen, arthrotec, pregabalin, etc. Used to be daily, multiple times. And tecta to protect my stomach from bleeding out my nose. Still in fuckloads of pain - always.

But by stopping the frequency i have found it helps with the tolerance. I've also lost maybe 75 lbs over 5-ish years which also helps.

My doc knows I have issues with other drugs and I'm hesitant to take anything more potent for pain.

I want the pain to end but I don't want the remedy to destroy the rest of me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

huh? how does one pill of ibuprofen do that? or is it taking it like every day or a drug interaction

[–] Wogi 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Taking it every day wears away your stomach and intestinal lining and you could get ulcers. Also generally it's not just one, it's 3-4. Sometimes multiple times a day.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

yeah i mean if you have significant issues with migraines you prob shouldnt be taking it every day but rather finding a more permanent solution, also is that only ibuprofen? what about acetaminophen or nsaids

[–] Entropywins 2 points 2 months ago

My aunt actually had this happen went brain dead from the loss of blood when a huge ulcer popped. She was in the hospital for a lung biopsy when it happened it was pretty terrible and it was later concluded ibuprofen was the most likely cause.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not trying to be tough. Just never really thought those pills did much.

[–] Wogi 1 points 2 months ago

They do help. Tylenol for back pain, ibuprofen or aspirin for swelling or other pain.

The problem is it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to really kick in. So the question always becomes "did it go away or are the drugs working?"

Generally, yeah they're doing something.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Man, this took me so long to get through my skull. I used to be a "I don't need the medicine, why self-medicate when I can just endure it and it will go away".

I got older, started having those little aches turn into ruin-your-day annoyances that only reset with a sleep overnight and now I mildly resent young me for being silly about it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

But then I can't complain!

[–] Voyajer 3 points 2 months ago

I'd probably take them more often if they did anything for me. Last time I was injured they did fuck all.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I needed to hear this today, thank you!

Sent after finally taking some Ibuprofen

[–] Atrichum 2 points 2 months ago

Who's out there not taking medicine for a headache or cramps? I'll take two Advil liquigels at even the hint of a headache.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Taking painkillers is kind of like closing the doors of the control room as the captain of a sub and driving onwards when there's a fire onboard.

[–] RizzRustbolt 2 points 2 months ago

I would, but I must suffer. Because there is currently a cat sitting on me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

I used to have frequent headaches as a child.
Initially, I just took the medicine, but everytime, it returned with 2xamplitude after a day or so (probably when the effect wore off).
Stopped taking the medicine after a few years.

It was much later that I realised, headaches always have a root cause and the pain was just telling me - there's something much worse going on.

Pain is your friend. Tells you when there is a problem and sometimes, even helps you know where.
Had I taken painkillers for my broken toe, I probably would have broken it again... and again.

Something gloryhole something rough something headache medicine.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Relax the muscles around your skull, headache gone.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Yeah just simply stop having a headache

[–] marcos 2 points 2 months ago

There exist people that need to do just that. That said, they won't learn it from somebody telling them.

(And yeah, fuck the people that assume it applies to everybody.)

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 months ago

It works for me.
