Jerboa is a native-android client for Lemmy, built using the native android framework, Jetpack Compose.

Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.

Idk it just seems to work/look better and doesn't sign me out whenever I go on some certain instances

I definitely prefer the app because it has a critical feature for me: tap to collapse

I read a lot of the comments and being able to quickly collapse them is absolutely essential. There's no way I'm able to hit that tiny little box in the webgui on mobile.

I've signed up to support the dev because honestly, for an alpha this is pretty good. It seems to get timeout errors all the time even when the vote goes through, and you're right it's annoying that it can't load Lemmy links internally, but it's a great start and I hope it continues.

Although it's still missing the button to go to the next top level comment

That was one of my favourite boost features. And you could use your volume button to jump.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It was also a thing in the stock app. Actually, the fact that it was so fucking buggy was one of the things that made me go to infinity

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I did not know that. Used boost for so long that I forgot what the official app was like

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, except the volume button part, and only to go down

Absolutely not! Clicking on links to a LOT of other communities/posts ends up opening a web browser within Jerboa to view the content. I got so tired of it that I moved to the mobile web site and now the user interface is consistent.

That is very true, the app is definitely not perfect and I still do use desktop for moments like those, I just find that more manageable than it signing me out everytime I'm on certain instances

checkout the Android App settings in Open by default > Add link
in latest app update they added new community links

Yeah, so there are 8 links, but thousands of Lemmy servers. This will never scale and there's no way I'm going to go do that every time I update, which will never have an up to date list of all relevant domains. This isn't even a valid workaround, much less a real solution unfortunately.

Also, those are all second level domains, but I'm seeing most Lemmy servers are at subdomain level. This means the system would be trying to send say mail.lemmy.ml to Jerboa, which it isn't equipped to handle nor would I want it to.

That's fixed in an upcoming release. I forget if it's 0.0.34 or whatever comes next, but that was implemented in the last week.

It's a fast moving project, so check back in every week or two. It may be a bumpy ride in the next couple weeks as lemmy (the server bit) gets a new release and instances slowly upgrade, so have some patience with it in the meantime.

There are functionalities that are missing but overall I'm pretty satisfied, for an alpha release

Jerboa was the reason for me to take the plunge and actually create an account. It feels very similar to Sync out of the box which I have been using to browse Reddit before. But there are definitely some rough edges still that need to be ironed out.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Right? Sync was also my companion of choice for 10+ years, and Jerboa has a very familiar feeling to it. All black theme and it's already nearly there.

Might need some polishing, but it's close enough.

I can't take my desktop pc to the toilet so...

[–] 84615_on_resu 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean, you can, but you choose not to..

But you CAN rdp to it from the toilet.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Instructions unclear. Toilet is now in front of desk

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

As it should be

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

It's not Sync for Reddit, but it gets the job done. Hopefully more development can be made seeing the user base is growing so fast

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

It's got potential, but the mobile website is still a better experience at the moment.

I'm seeing timeouts and javalang errors constantly in the app.

Jerboa is fantastic for an app in it's early stages. I always prefer an app over a web browser.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

All I know is the app. I find it's alright, definitely some gotchas, but overall it seems to be working fine

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

yeah, not yet.

there is good and bad, and i expect that there will be more and more features released now that there are a heap of users :)

I would prefer the app, because it looks great and reminds me of Infinity, but it crashes way too often for me.

I still use it and appreciate the work being done on it but it's still too buggy for me to truly prefer it. I still regularly login to Lemmy through my browser, which I would very rarely ever do on reddit once I started using the infamous third-party apps.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm back and forth. I made a Firefox app and it works. I use Jerboa and it works. I'm waiting to see which one comes out on top in the coming weeks before making a decision.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How can I use jerboa with kbin?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I think you can follow kbin magazines with your lemmy account, an then I suppose they'll show up in Jerboa.

You cannot use Jerboa as a client directly for kbin.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Yes, with that autoloading thread bug on the main page, the web is kinda unusable for me. But Jerboa has worked fairly well for most of my needs

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I haven't tried the app, but quite pleased with the web GUI on tablet.

[–] Ungoliantsspawn 2 points 1 year ago

I seem to be drifting towards the PWA ... But a decent native app would be more than welcome

I think someone needs to make a /c/lost_lemmings or something. ;)
