In my new fanfiction I actually explore this in a bit of depth when a mentat character observes another's affection for her as a series of chemical signals and obsolete, vestigial reflexes from ancient evolution. It's kind of sad to think about, but I could easily apply the same thing to sadness...

i gotta give you points for rewording the meme to be more concise and using terms that are more respectable academically.
