Is it possible to block entire instances? I see I can block by user or community, but not by instance.

This would be useful as there are some instances based around politics etc. that I don't care about.

Currently the admins have to curate this for you through federation, although you can try and whack a mole individual communities from an instance. Heaps of people are asking for user level control of blocking instances and I hope it comes soon as there's a couple instances I keep seeing federated into my feed that I find abhorrent, and this growth phase of Lemmy means new communities on those instances keep appearing.

Yeah user level control for instance blocking is something we need unless instances start sharing defederation lists.

Blocking communities isn't the same because it only hides posts and not the bad users interacting elsewhere

Oh I didn't mean blocking users, to me a user's home instance is a matter of convenience and not a cross for them to bear as a member of some perceived village.

They can always choose an instance which aligns with better behavior if they don't really belong to the bad ones

I hear that you can if you host your own instance but that seems kinda technical.

Selfhosted is going to get a lot easier as we get more managed host providers (they set up everything for you, give you the keys to the kingdom, and provide tech support as you grow). Elast.io and SpaceHost are two that I've seen advertised already.

Awesome Thank you for the info. I really look forward to watching this grow.

That would be a useful feature

Only instance admins can do that.

Plausibly it should be possible for users to client side block instances as well. I don't see any reason why not.

This should be done on instance level but I'm not sure how I feel about that.

If that is how it's going to be, we will get a lot of small instances with each their own set of instance-blocking-rules. Some want the funny cat gifs instances but not the nazi instances. Some do not want the cat instances but do want the nazi instances but Als not xyz... Mayham

In the end it will probably be like the way we interact with general websites: each user has their own set of websites they have bookmarked. Nobody is going through all the internet websites and sort by new.

I think we'll go the way of mastodon and email and have a few well maintained block lists for different groups.

You will be able to do this with 0.19.0 release.

Users can block instances

Users can now block instances, so that their communities are hidden from listings. This is done via POST /api/v3/site/block with parameters int instance_id, bool block.

It'd also be nice if you could pots without federation, or control the federation, to avoid brigading from other instances.
