I'm surprised people found the first movie groundbreaking. The story is about as compelling and memorable as a teabag on its third use

It was more about the tech used to make it back then than the movie itself. The story wasn't awful, but you're right, it wasn't that amazing, either. I think the only neat thought experiment that stuck out at the time was the idea of what consciousness meant/what is a soul, which not many mainstream movies discussed back then aside from the Matrix. Of course, Black Mirror did a far more phenomenal job of this idea with their San Junipero(sp?) episode, but that was almost 10 years later.
