Nihilism comes from the Latin nihil, meaning "nothing". As a philosophical position, nihilism involves denying certain existence claims. Two prominent forms of nihilism are existential nihilism, which rejects claims that human life is meaningful, and moral nihilism, which rejects claims that human actions can be right or wrong. Other forms include epistemological nihilism, mereological nihilism, and political nihilism.

As with any other philosophical label, there is diversity within nihilism and disagreement over what counts as nihilism. Labels with some overlap include existentialism, absurdism, fatalism, and pessimism. Some people embrace nihilistic conclusions as a philosophical matter, while other people relate to nihilistic themes more as a matter of intuition, personal experience, or personal expression.

Hi, I’m Arxir!

Me and some other Mods from r/nihilism decided to migrate to the Lemmyverse. Anyone familiar with r/nihilism might remember that moderation is very lax and our rules do not extend beyond the site rules and we would like to keep it that way here as well.

Other than that, this community is not tied to the subreddit. What this community becomes, what content You want to have here and the depth of philosophical or other discussions is entirely determined by You.

I would like to kickstart engagement here a little bit and to achieve this I will implement a weekly open chat, where I would love to hear from You. I also encourage You to share your thoughts, what books You read and especially what You want this community to be :)

I could ask you the same about being subscribed to this community. To live, we have to decide that some things do matter at least personally. And even though nothing matters in the grand scheme of things, I would still like this community to be a place for like-minded people.

I also think that communities like these are a good first place for people coming into contact with nihilism. Nihilism is in a sense kind of a done topic, but what isn't done is the influx of new people. Thus, even though communities like this may cycle through individual engagement faster than others, I believe that they are nonetheless a good experience to have had. And hey, maybe even a seasoned veteran like you might pick up a good book recommendation or something.

So I would challenge your question: Why not? What's the point in not doing it?
