you need to place a pump just before you run out of head lift (normal buildings have ~4m I think)
you can see the head lift of the pump itself with the build menu hologram
Normal buildings have 10m. It is in the building descriptions
right, yeah 4m seemed a bit too low
Hmm i never noticed a visual indicator for the head lift. I can see the blue hologram and some sort of "waves" starting from the pump hologram. Assume, I have build a industrial tank on the bottom, 0 meter's above the ground. From there the pipeline starts straight upwards, for example 20 meter's. Where should I place the first mk II pump? At 3 meter's or later?
You can only see the blue headlift indicator when placing a pump after another pump. There isn't a baseline headlift indicator unfortunately.
Buildings supposedly have a 12m headlift as opposed to their advertised 10m headlift so have a little forgiveness.
Best indicator is to place and power your pump. If it's not actively pumping, then it's too high.
Also, pump mk ll is 50m, mk l is 20m :)
Unless you're power starved, just place your first pump near the output, don't waste time trying to save a few meters. After that, the next pump will snap to place where the last pumps headlift runs out. I read somewhere that the indicator won't show if it's more than 100m away horizontally, didn't have to test that situation myself though.
