Commander format discussion

Also called EDH or Elder Dragon Highlander, Commander is Magic's most popular format and all about picking your hero and building a deck around them. In this casual, multiplayer format, you choose a legendary creature to serve as your commander and build the rest of your 100 card deck around their color identity and unique abilities. Players are only allowed one of each card in their deck, with the exception of basic lands, but they can use cards from throughout Magic's history.

Commander combines the command zone, color identity, singleton deckbuilding, multiplayer strategies, and the entire MtG cardpool for one of the most exciting and fresh ways to play.

What is their power level, are they well balanced? Which one do you plan to buy?

My goal is to get the Mordor and food decks. Then tweak them to be a Sarumon vs Treebeard set of duel decks. I'm hoping that can keep them relatively on the same power level.

I do think I would have liked if they introduced a partner mechanic like the stranger things one. Where you could partner, but only with members of the fellowship.

Could literally have been "Fellowship of the Ring" as the name for the mechanic.

I'm not sure about power levels, but I've ordered the Riders of Rohan and the Elven Council decks. I really love the theme for both of these and am excited to see how they play out of the box and with some potential tweaks from the set booster box I've grabbed.

Do you have plans to pick one of them up?

I only got the Sauron one and will upgrade it with Sauron, The Dark Lord as commander and some other cards from the set.

I'm planning on getting the Food and Fellowship deck, or getting the blue-green elf deck. I'm new to the format and I don't have any commander decks, so I guess one of these is going to be my first!

You said you already tried to order yours - are pre-orders open at local game stores? I'm going to be at the pre-release tomorrow, so I guess I'll try to order mine then!

I ordered my set several weeks ago from a LGS, so deals are probably less attractive by now.

Yeah, a friend of mine ordered his Food and Fellowship some weeks ago too and paid almost half the price it's being selled now.

I'll go first:

I think they are all pretty well designed and seems to be well balanced between them, however the Food and Fellowship seems to be the best one, maybe that's why all 6 of the decks that my LGS had are already all sold out.

I planned to get the Food and Fellowship, but since they are all sold out i bought the The Hosts of Mordor and plan to upgrade it, but i think i'll only use cards from the set to keep the flavor and style. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
