One thing I still don't understand is if upvotes are per instance or collective. If we had a karma system, it would be very open to abuse with instances popping up to farm.

I wonder what kind of metrics could make lemmy/fediverse stand out. Obviously the discussions are the point, but karma was a psychological motivator.

Please god, no karma system. I like the up/down votes on posts and comments, because it lets me know if a community likes the content or not. But a popularity contest is absolutely unnecessary.

That's actually a nice point a view and I appreciate it. Never thought about karma that way.

I hope lemmy doesn't add karma, but even if it did it would be up to the instances' admins to add it or not. That's what make the fediverse stand out, the fact that the community decides instead of someone outside of it
