I was reading about Newcomen's engine where the introduction of water to the cylinder makes the steam go into liquid, and they refer to it as "partial vaccuum" creation. How come?

It seems like if you pack a wound it would prevent the wound from closing and would keep it open.

There are so many children in need. I’ve been having conversations with several fellow mid-30s Millennials (who have stable jobs and own their homes) who have a desire to adopt, but the cost is astronomical. One couple I am good friends with was frustrated to find out that none of the adoption fees actually go to the children in need; they are administrative. They decided to foster for now and have been doing wonderfully with that so far. I have a couple of friends who were adopted by their parents and their stories are really amazing. This upfront cost is so counter-intuitive to me. You’re setting potential parents back tens of thousands of dollars and creating a huge barrier to placing children in safe, loving, and secure homes. Why not designate that money for the child’s schooling or a savings/retirement account? Please help me understand.

How is it made so quickly after throwing up or after bad diarrhea when it feels like your stomach is totally empty?

I get that civilization can't survive without arable land to grow crops or raise livestock with, but in the 21st century, not all land is used for that purpose.

For example, I open an account at a shady bank, they make it up that I have $100,000 USD in the system. Then I SWIFT transfer the money to a legitimate bank. How would the legitimate bank know that his money is fake? Assuming that the shady bank is discreet about it and other banks dont know of its reputation

Maybe I'm getting too philosophical here, but I'm always surprised on how different can taste be among people of even the same culture.

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can explain how a plane that leaves an hour later than it’s scheduled departure arrives 5-10 minutes early for it’s scheduled arrival.

Thanks in advance

If a clone of me was created, will said clone be predisposed to be attracted to the same type of people as me?

Original Title: Eli5. Why does the compression change in breathing compressed air at different depths? Surely the ‘oxy-mix’ metal container doesn’t physically ‘compress’ any further than it has in 1atm (unless at near Hadal Depths)

Im obviously confused somewhere. But let me explain further.

You have a metal container, carrying your breathable gas mix (depending on your depth). If this container doesn’t actually physically compress further due to the rigidity of the metal, then why would breathing a 80-20 mix of Ni and O in a compressed container cause any effects?
