so as far as i understand the dough rises because the yeast consumes sugars in the dough and releases oxygen creating bubbles in the dough, my question is what happens if you dont do anything with the dough? will the yeast just keep growing? will it just die off eventually?

I know some species can interbreed, but that's very rare, why can't the genetic material (eggs and sperm) just make some kind of mix between two species? Why can't a chicken and a turkey produce some kind of abomination that's a mix of the two?

I used to think modern Jews are the descendants of the ancient Hebrews but someone pointed out that ”more than 80 percent of the maternal lineages of Ashkenazi Jews could be traced to Europe, with only a few lineages originating in the Near East”. “This new study makes the suggestion that more than 80% of Ashkenazi Jews can trace their ultimate maternal ancestry to prehistoric Europe.”

For example, if Bob says to Mary "I'll visit you next Summer", which date does he mean - the start of astronomical summer, or the start of metereological summer?

If this is different from country to country, how do I know what people mean in a particular country?

So I just started a farm not too long ago and noticed a peculiar behavior in my first animals. I bought 50 Kabir chickens as a start, and noticed that out of 50 of them, 7 individual chickens aren't afraid of me. Not only that, they seek my companionship, often running from the fields to greet me, jumping on me and roosting on my arms when I lie in my outdoor hammock. The rest of the 43 are very wary of me, often running away and hiding the moment they hear me coming.

Then I got 5 goats. Same thing. 2 of them liked being pet, while the others would try to bump me and run when I got too close. Then it was cows, same thing. Out of 4, the other 3 couldn't care less about me while 1 was actively trying to draw my attention and got closer everytime she saw me.

They're the same species, yet some of them just don't see me as a threat. Better yet, they're actively trying to mingle with me while the others are actively trying to avoid me. I don't treat these animals differently, I don't give them special attention, so what makes some of them just inclined to seek out my companionship while the others think I'm a threat?

Original Title: ELI5: Bard has a digital wallet, initial balance is $0. Bard sets it to auto top up $20 if the balance is below $20. Bard always spends $14 for every transaction. What's the max balance of Bard's digital wallet?

This is just a random real-life related question popped up in my mind, not math homework or interview question. I've asked some of my engineer friends but they couldn't give me the general math formula, only the step-by-step iterations.

I’ve been traveling recently and certain airlines have had weight restrictions of 7kg(15lbs) or less for carry on bags. They made me check my bag at no cost but take my laptop out. Why?

Why does it matter if it goes in the top or bottom of the plane? I understand weight limits for checked baggage but for carry on it’s makes no sense to me. It’s still the same weight regardless of whether or not it’s in the top of bottom of the plane. Same with the laptop. Why does it matter if it’s in the cabin or the belly?

Misandry and misogyny are the same things for different genders, but misanthropy is completely different than both of them

So what are the differences?

So there's this scene in Interstellar where their ship explodes and it makes the ship spin. The girl doesn't move her head against the spin and she passes out while the experienced guy held his head the opposite of the spin and didn't pass out. Why's that? Is it something to do with blood rushing out of the head because of the spinning?

Audio and ebooks don't require the manufacturing and shipping cost.

So why do we pay a large price for what is basically data?

I read somewhere that oxygen levels in the water and tides have an effect. Obviously I understand that wind and waves will stir up sediment but I feel there’s more factors at play. Curious if anyone knows.

I remember not being allowed energy drinks as a kid because my “heart would explode” by my mom right before she’d buy us tons of sugary sodas. What’s the true difference? And if it’s only the sugar content, what about sugar free energy drinks?
